June 15- Boston Bruins win first Stanley Cup in 39 Years
2011- On this day in Sports History, the Boston Bruins won the 2011 Stanley Cup. The Game 7 win over the Vancouver Canucks broke their 39 year Stanley Cup drought. The Bruins last won the Stanley Cup in 1972 when they defeated the New York Rangers in the finals. They had several good teams in between Stanley Cups as they made the NHL playoffs 32 times between 1972 and 2011. But they finally won their sixth Stanley Cup and their first one since 1972 on this day in 2011.
The Boston Bruins finished the 2011 regular season first in the Northeast division. They earned the third seed and a first round matchup against the Montreal Canadiens. The Canadiens took the Bruins to a Game 7 but the Bruins prevailed. They then swept the Philadelphia Flyers 4-0. The Bruins then beat the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 7 of the Conference Semifinals to make the Stanley Cup Finals.
The 2011 Stanley Cup Finals didn’t start out well for the Bruins. The Canucks had home ice advantage and Rogers Arena in Vancouver, Canada was a tough place to play. The Bruins lost Games 1 and 2 by one goal each to begin the series down 2-0. The Bruins came back to their home ice and won Games 3 and 4 by a score of 8-1 and 4-0. With the series tied 2-2, the Bruins had to go back to Vancouver where they lost the game 1-0. Game 6 was back in Boston which the Bruins won fairly easily again as the score was 5-2. The series deciding Game 7 was back in Vancouver which meant the Bruins would have to win in Rogers Arena in order to win the Stanley Cup. Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand each scored two goals and Tim Thomas had 37 saves while giving up zero goals as the Bruins won the game 4-0. The win gave the Boston Bruins the 2011 Stanley Cup and officially ended their 39 year Stanley Cup drought.
