July 9- Robin Roberts Ends his Streak with 28 Consecutive Complete Games

1953- On this day in Sports History, Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Robin Roberts was taken out of the game in the eighth inning. Although this doesn’t seem special, it was for Roberts. This game ended his streak of 28 consecutive complete games. Robin Roberts had completed every game he started for an amazing 28 straight games.

The streak began in the previous season on August 28, 1952, when Roberts pitched a complete game as the Phillies beat the St. Louis Cardinals 10-6. The final complete game of the streak came on July 5, 1953 as Roberts shutout the Pittsburgh Pirates for a 2-0 Phillies win. In the 28 game streak, Robert’s won 21 of the games. His record during it was 21-6 and one no decision. The most runs in a game that Roberts gave up in the 28 game streak was seven. He did that three times and held a 1-2 record in those three games.

The third game of the streak was an incredible pitching performance by Roberts. The September 6, 1952 game against the Boston Braves went 17 innings and Roberts pitched all 17 innings for the complete game. The Phillies scored 4 runs in the bottom of the 8th inning to tie the game at 6-6. Neither team scored again until the bottom of the 17th inning when the Phillies scored to win the game 7-6. While the Braves used three different pitchers to pitch the 17 innings, Roberts pitched them all himself to get the 17 inning complete game win.

Another unique game of the 28 game streak was April 30, 1953 when the Phillies faced the St. Louis Cardinals. The game ended after the 5th inning with the Phillies and Cardinals tied 1-1. Roberts finished the game with a five inning complete game no decision.

On this day in 1953, the consecutive game streak came to an end when Roberts was taken out in the 8th inning. The Phillies were ahead 4-3 entering the 8th inning. Roberts got one out before giving up a run which tied the game 4-4. The Phillies manager decided to relieve Roberts as he put in Bob Miller. The Phillies ended up beating the Dodgers 6-5.

Roberts finished the 1952 season with a 28-7 record and 30 complete games. In the 1953 season, Roberts finished with a 23-16 record and 33 complete games. He finished his 19 year career with 305 complete games. Throwing complete games was much more common then than it is today. Of active MLB pitchers in 2020, Bartolo Colon has the most complete games in their career with 38 over 21 years. He is followed by Justin Verlander and Felix Hernandez who have 26 and 25, respectively.

Robin Roberts was a seven time MLB All-Star and was inducted into the Baseball Hall-of-Fame in 1976.
