July 17- Liz Cambage scores 53 Points to Break the WNBA Single Game Record
2018- On this day in Sports History, Liz Cambage scored 53 points to set the WNBA record for most points in a game. Cambage, a 6’8” center, broke the single game points record playing for the Dallas Wings as they beat the New York Liberty 104-87. The 53 point performance beat the previous record of 51 points by Riquna Williams of the Tulsa Shock in 2013.

The Liz Cambage 53 point game came from her going 17/22 from the field and 15/16 from the free throw line. The 17 made field goals included four three-pointers by the Dallas center. Entering the game, she had only made a combined five three-pointers in the 22 games they had played so far in the season. Cambage’s fourth three-pointer of the game with just over two minutes left was the one that broke the record and gave her 53 points. Cambage also finished the game with 10 rebounds, 5 blocks, 2 assists, one steal, and zero turnovers.
Liz Cambage was born in London in 1991 but quickly moved to Australia where she grew up. She played basketball in Australia before becoming the second overall pick in the 2011 WNBA draft to the Tulsa Shock. However, she spent most of her time playing overseas and only played in the WNBA two seasons between 2011-2017. In 2018, she signed a deal with the Dallas Wings to come back to the WNBA. She now plays for the Las Vegas Aces and is one of the best players in the WNBA.
The record setting performance by Liz Cambage on this day in 2018 put her on top of the leaderboard for most points scored in a game. No one has yet to knock her off of her top spot either. She is followed by Riquna Williams who scored 51 in 2013. Third place is held by Maya Moore who scored 48 points in a double overtime game in 2014. Although scoring 53 points in a WNBA game is really impressive, the record could be within reach for some of WNBA’s talented future stars to break someday unlike the NBA’s record of 100 points set by Wilt Chamberlain in 1962.
